Kill the DJ Lyrics

[Pre-Chorus]
The blood left on the dance floor, running, running red
The bullet that you asked for killing you to death unless you—

[Chorus]
Someone kill the DJ (Shoot the fucking DJ)
Someone kill the DJ (Shoot the fucking DJ)
Someone kill the DJ (Shoot the fucking DJ)

Hold him underwater 'til that motherfucker drowns

[Post-Chorus]
We are the vultures, the dirtiest kind
The culture wars in your heart and your mind
Ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh
Someone's gonna get you, boy
Shoot that fucker down!

[Instrumental Break]

[Bridge]
Someone kill the DJ (Shoot the fucking DJ)
Someone kill the DJ (Shoot the fucking DJ)
(Walking after dark) Someone kill the DJ (Shoot the fucking DJ)
(Walking after dark) Someone kill the DJ (Shoot the fucking DJ)
(Walking after dark) Someone kill the DJ
Shoot that fucker down, wow!

About

Genius Annotation

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong had never written a dance song before “Kill the DJ,” but bassist Mike Dirnt was adamant about it. Armstrong commented in a Rolling Stone article:

Mike asked me to write a song with a four-on-the-floor rhythm. I’d never done it before. We were trying to figure out how to make dance music without turning into a dance band.

Armstrong goes on to speak about the lyrics, telling journalists that this song is not about killing any particular DJ, but more about the American governments refusal to improve the conditions of this country.

It blows your mind and pisses you off. It’s a song about being drunk, going through this chaos, feeling fucked up and all you want to do is get more drunk. I don’t even want to know about it anymore.

“Kill the DJ” was very well received by critics. Zane Lowe even put it at #2 for his 100 Hottest Tracks of 2012 list.

The official music video was released on September 4, 2012. Samuel Bayer took the lead on direction. Bayer was more than familiar with the band at this point after directing every video for American Idiot.

What did Green Day say about "Kill the DJ"?
Genius Answer

Armstrong told MTV:

Kill the DJ' is not about, you know, killing a DJ, it’s not literal. It’s more of a metaphor for information overload.

This song is sort of a left turn, kind of going into something more of a four-on-the-floor dance groove. [Bassist] Mike [Dirnt] was really like, ‘Well, let’s do something that’s more like Blondie’s “Heart Of Glass,” kind of a disco feel to it.’ We’ve always kind of got into grooves and things like that, with like ‘When I Come Around’ and ‘Brain Stew,’ but this is the first time we went full-on dancemusic, but with a Green Day approach to it.
