The greatest loss of life by class was among the third class “steerage” passengers, many of them Irish. They were confined to the lower levels of the ship, where the steerage mechanism of the ship was located. It was the trade in immigration that made the construction of huge ships profitable. More women and children in 3rd class died than men of the 1st class.
