I’m Mandy, Fly Me Lyrics

[Intro]
Oh, no you'll never get me up in one of these again
'Cause what goes up (What goes up)
Must come—

[Verse 1]
Just like a rollin' stone
I'm outside lookin' in
But if your chance came would you take it?
Where on earth do I begin?

[Chorus]
I'm Mandy, fly me

[Verse 2]
I've often heard her jingle
It's never struck a chord
With a smile as bright as sunshine
She called me through the poster
And welcomed me aboard
She led me she fed me
She read me like a book
But I'm hiding in the small print
Won't you take another look?
And take me away
Try me, Mandy, fly me away
[Bridge]
The world was spinning like a ball
And then it wasn't there at all
And as my heart began to fall

[Instrumental]

[Verse 3]
I saw her walking on the water
As the sharks were comin' for me
I felt Mandy pull me up, give me the kiss of life
Just like the girl in Dr. No No No No
Oh, when they pulled me from the wreckage
And her body couldn't be found
Was it in my mind it seems
I had a crazy dream
I told them so but they said no no no no

[Verse 4]
I found me on a street
And starin' at a wall
If it hadn't have been for Mandy
Her promise up above me
Well I wouldn't be here at all
So if you're travellin' in the sky
Don't be surprised if someone says "Hi..."
[Chorus]
"I'm Mandy, fly me"

About

Genius Annotation

Eric Stewart recalled the origins of the song “I’m Mandy Fly Me”:

National Airlines used to have this beautiful poster that they displayed of this gorgeous stewardess inviting you onto the plane. […] “I’m Cindy, fly me” which was a quite sexual connotation as well … and I thought God, do you know, there’s a song there.

So I brought it back…and put it to the guys: “Anybody interested in this ‘I’m Mandy Fly Me’?”.I’d switched it to Mandy. And Graham said “yeah, that sounds like a good idea. … We wrote it, and we didn’t like it. We, we scrapped it. It just wasn’t going anywhere.

But, enter from stage left, ha ha, the “wicked villain” Kevin Godley, twiddling his moustache, says “I know what’s wrong with it. Let’s sit down again.” He said “I think it just gets too bland, it just goes on, on one plane, your verses and your middles and your der-der-der, they’re all going on the one plane. What it needs is someone to go ‘Bash’ on the side of your head”. So we changed the rhythm completely, and we put two whacking great guitar solos in there, in the middle of this quiet, soft, floaty song. Once we’d got that idea in, it, it just gelled into something else.
