, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
Julian, John Lennon’s first son by first wife Cynthia, was feeling somewhat put out after his parent’s divorce. Despite having a Beatle for a dad, Lennon wasn’t a great father to him, instead throwing all his love into Yoko Ono (and after that, Julian’s half-brother Sean). Julian didn’t even see John until 1970, and was left out of his will completely.
Paul was the one usually there to act as something of a jolly uncle to console the child, something John noted and was jealous of.
Though “Hey Jude” was written to Julian Lennon, Paul wanted the lyrics to sound a bit ambiguous, so as they could affect other people as well. In a way, “letting her into his heart” could refer to Julian giving Yoko a shot.
