Play Crack the Sky Lyrics

(Rest in the deep)
I know that this is what you want
A funeral keeps both of us apart (Washed up on the beach)
You know that you are not alone
I need you like water in my lungs (This is the end)
This story's old but it goes on and on
Until we disappear
(This is the calm)
Calm me and let me taste the salt you breathed
While you were underneath
(We are the risen)
I am the one who haunts your dreams of mountains
Sunk below the sea (After the storm)
I spoke the words but never gave a thought
To what they all could mean (Rest in the deep)
I know that this is what you want
A funeral keeps both of us apart (Washed up on the beach)
You know that you are not alone
I need you like water in my lungs
This is the end

[Spoken]
Never to see any other way!

About

Genius Annotation

Brand New spin an acoustic tale of love lost at sea to close their sophomore record Deja Entendu. The song also works as a wreck ballad in the vein of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” or “The Mary Ellen Carter.” The song is commonly associated with the sinking of the ship Andrea Gail, which was technically lost at sea during the “Perfect Storm” of 1991.

“How do men act on a sinking ship? Do they hold each other? Do they pass around the whisky? Do they cry?”
– Sebastian Junger, The Perfect Storm

What did Brand New say about "Play Crack the Sky"?
Genius Answer

Jesse Lacey has explained the song’s title at a solo acoustic show in Jackson MS.

The title is a reference to a summer spent with Lacey’s childhood friend John Nolan from Taking Back Sunday helping out at a music event in Atlanta in exchange for an opening spot for their high school band. Nolan grew up only being allowed to listen to Christian music, and had an affection for a Christian Metal singer, Mylon Lefebvre, who had a “hit” song called “Crack The Sky” in the 1980s before disappearing. Nolan and Lacey were watching a band set up, and the singer turned out to be a washed up Mylon Lefebvre. Nolan stood up, and yelled “Play Crack The Sky!”. Lacey thought it was funny, and kept the quote for the title of this song.
