It's up to me now, turn on the bright lights
Oh, it's up to me now, turn on the bright lights
When asked by Clash Music the source of his lyrics, Paul Banks stated, “I take interest in human emotion so I often write about what I think other people are experiencing but I’ll say it’s me. Or I’ll write about a certain human experience I’ve never had but because it interests me.”
Throughout the song Paul Banks asserts his admiration for the city of New York, but still claims it hasn’t given him enough. It is his duty, to himself and the city he came from, to become inspired by all that surrounds him. He seeks enlightenment that he can only achieve through himself.
