I am hiding from some beast
But the beast was always here
Watching without eyes
Because the beast is just my fear
That I am just nothing
Now its just what I've become

Meaning

The “beast” is a very symbolical term, and can represent many things. A common usage is describing the devil/Satan as the beast, which connects to the religious/spiritual themes of the song.

Here, the beast is the protagonist’s fear that his life has been stripped of all meaning. There are many ways he tries to avoid it, or hide from the truth, but that fear in the back of his head never goes away.

This line is a little more personal than the earlier verses. In the first three the narrator was just telling us what he observed, and usually used the pronouns “we” or “our”, showing he was just reporting on the human condition. But here he shows he isn’t better than the rest of them. His own apathy has caused his problems, it isn’t just some inherent human characteristic’s fault.

These lines are also slightly ironic/paradoxical. The narrator has felt like he was one of the few who realized the risk of “living just to breathe” so to say. But his fear of becoming like one of them and losing his meaning led to him doing exactly that. Simply being aware of the risk and possibilities, and being able to put them into perspective doesn’t you better of than anyone else, you’re still human; and our narrator is a great example of that.
