We sit and grow our roots into the floor
But what are we waiting for? What are we waiting for?
By simply waiting around for your “ship to come” you are essentially sealing your fate. He uses a metaphor of a tree growing roots here to make his point. The longer the tree stays in one spot, the deeper its roots grow, and the more immovable it gets.
This sums up the way he views the human condition. Simply waiting and “collecting pennies” doesn’t bring you any closer to your salvation and afterlife, it just gets you stuck in the same spot in the life we live, where we will later die without doing anything about it. We are victims of that fear, and are afraid of doing anything drastic to risk worsening our current state.
