Something's always coming you can hear it in the ground
It swells into the air
With the rising, rising sound
And never comes but shakes the boards and rattles all the doors
What are we waiting for, what are we waiting for
Many people, perhaps including the narrator, always feel as if that “big” moment, where they get shaken out of apathy and start seeing what life is about. It is swirling through the air, just out of reach. It might approach the metaphorical door, but it will never enter. However, the people who don’t realize that it is all a tease and will always escape them are content with chasing it. To some people, it is the only thing that keeps them going.
It should be noted that these are all coming from the ground. We all know what is supposedly located far underground in a religious sense. And these aspirations that never come true sound a lot like Satan’s empty promises. The fact that this song has plenty of religious overtones makes this possibility somewhat likely and less of a stretch.
