Genius Annotation

“I Will Wait” is the first single and third track on Mumford & Sons' second studio album, Babel. It is the band’s most successful song as of 2022, having peaked at #12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and being certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA. It was also nominated for best rock performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards.

The song appears to tell the story of a man fighting through troubled times to be with the person he loves. Although one could interpret the song as having Christian undertones, Mumford has denied the presumption that the album is a statement of religion. Speaking with Big Issue, he said:

We don’t feel evangelical about anything. Really. Other than music. […] Spirituality is the word we engage with more. We’re fans of faith, no religion. We’re just writing songs that ask questions. Sometimes the best way to go about exploring a question, things we wouldn’t necessarily talk about in conversation, is by writing a song.
