Someone to love
Someone like you
Love Me Do was the band’s first chart success, peaking at #17 in its initial release. The song would spark the band’s drive to succeed further. In the USA, it reached #1 when released again in 1964.
Starr said of the song’s importance:
For me that was more important than anything else. That first piece of plastic. You can’t believe how great that was. It was so wonderful. We were on a record!
A persistent rumour was that Brian Epstein, who still owned his family record store at the time, had bulk ordered a large quantity of the single to up its chart ranking. Lennon explained:
The best thing was it came into the charts in two days and everybody thought it was a fiddle, because our manager’s stores sent in these returns and everybody down south thought, “Aha, he’s buying them himself or he’s just fiddling the charts”, but he wasn’t.
