Go to Heaven
How do you like it
Living in Hell
Vedder may be criticizing the church’s idea of the all-absolving and vindicating healing powers of God. In theory (and probably largely in practice as well), followers of Christianity could lead a life drenched in sin, but simply confess to their wrongdoings and spend eternity in heaven regardless.
It is also possible to read this lyric as a sarcastic response to the notion of Heaven. Heaven is this holy, wonderful place of salvation, and if you believe in the right faith you’ll end up there after you die. So anything other than that, like living on Earth, is Hell. “How do you like it?”
