Genius Annotation

Beenie Man was inspired to write this song after purchasing a BMW around 1996. He was driving in his new car and the Sean Paul song “Infiltrate” on the Playground Riddim came on the radio. Inspired by Sean Paul’s song, Beenie Man started to freestyle on the riddim toasting: “Sim Simma, who got the keys to my Bimma?”. Beenie Man also cites Missy Elliot’s “I Can’t Stand the Rain” as an influence for this lyric. Specifically when Elliot says “Beep Beep, who got the keys to my jeep?”. Beenie Man contacted the original producer of the riddim, Jeremy Harding. They arranged to record the song at Harding’s studio, but when Beenie Man started freestyling to the riddim and came up with the lyric “How can I, make love to a fellow?” there was some controversy. Being that at the time Jamaica had a strong homophobic culture, producers feared the lyric would be taken wrong. However, Beenie Man insisted that they keep the lyric, adding that controversy will sell more records. Beenie Man was right, the song reached #6 on the US Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart and On the Hot R&B singles chart, the song reached No. 15.
