After Till was beaten, J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant forced him to carry a 75-pound cotton gin fan into their truck. They drove Till to the side of the Tallahatchie River, forced him to strip naked,shot him in the head, wired the cotton gin fan to his neck, and threw Till in the muddy river. His bloated and mutilated body was found three days later (August 31, 1955) floating feet-up in the shallow water near a current called Pecan Point.
