This could be another reference to the myth of “Orpheus and Eurydice.
In the myth, Orpheus attempts to rescue his wife from Hades. He is allowed to do this on the condition that he must walk in front of her and not look back until both had reached the other side of the upper world.
Orpheus reaches the upper world and immediately turns back to see his wife, forgetting that he alone had crossed the threshold, not her. As a result, she vanishes from his sight forever.
