I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air
As confirmed in a Billboard interview, this is Lorde’s response to much of modern pop music, which is saturated with lyrics of letting go at by throwing one’s hands in the air at parties and clubs. It’s teenager rebellion on a musical level.
The line reflects a sense of growing out of an old way and by her following with, “So there,” she also realizes she is not sure what should fill that space instead. All she knows is that she is moving past a fashion that she just does not agree with.
She is probably not a big fan of Flo Rida’s “In the Ayer”
Funny enough, this song’s beat is one of the heaviest in Lorde’s catalog, and it invites a lighter moment, but it’s not too danceable. This points to the line likely being a general reference, as numerous songs and DJs have utilized similar lines to excite a young crowd.
