Aphrodite lady seashell bikini (garden panty)
Shown through her VMA performance and music video for “Applause”, Lady Gaga has been keeping up with the theme of art. One of the most alluded art pieces is the, “Birth of Venus” in which the goddess Venus, known as Aphrodite in Greek mythology, poses nude standing in a sea shell in the ocean.
In the painting, Venus is surrounded by two forms of love: physical and intellectual. The couple on the left represent a quixotic romance while the modestly dressed girl standing firmly on the ground, with a forest growing behind her, represents pragmatic intellect and wisdom. Graced in the middle is Venus, who takes no side an gazes straight ahead.
Gaga is embodying not only Venus, but also a cohesion of two different sides of humanity: the dreamy and the real. By wearing the garden (which represents the intellect side of the painting) panty (which represents sexuality and lust) Gaga creates a smart, understated dynamic.
