Genius Annotation

The title track opens The 1975’s self-titled debut.

This track utilizes various euphemisms for oral sex. It is interpreted to be an intro to “Sex,” another track that expresses intimate details.

The song is featured as the opening track on the band’s sophomore album I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it and their third album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. It is revamped to match the style of the album but with the same lyrics.

What did The 1975 say about "The 1975"?
Genius Answer

For a start, I love that song, ‘The 1975’. I like the way that on our debut album, the band is called ‘The 1975’, that song is called ‘The 1975’, off the album ‘The 1975’. That song was us stating our identity. I think what happened was George made a piece of music, like half a song or something; we were listening to it and we were like “yeah, yeah it’s quite good“ and then we stripped it back and just listened to that. It was an intro to a song, but then
we realized that the rest of the idea wasn’t that brilliant. But the initial sound – the
very first sound that you hear – it’s just like an arpeggiator made from a guitar, it’s the most pensive sound on the album. It’s – hopefully – immediately captivating. When we heard that on its own, we were like, “I think this is the start of the album”. And then we never went back, we never really questioned that.

What else have the artists said about the song?
Genius Answer

I wanted the primary statement from the album to be really clean and meta. I saw the record like that, it felt quite self involved not in an egocentric way more like a journal or a diary entry. I wanted the track to be like a start up sound in the mold of Sega, Playstation, Xbox, Windows etc. I loved the way these brands had sounds that introduce themsleves every time their devices are turned on. It’s like we’re checking in everytime “The 1975” starts – Remiding everyone we are The 1975 and there is a purpose to what we do.
