Awful Sound (Oh Eurydice) Lyrics

[Chorus: Win Butler & Régine Chassagne]
I know there's a way we can make 'em pay
Think it over and say, "I'm never going back again."

I know there's a way we can leave today
Think it over and say, "I'm never going back again."

[Post-Chorus: Win Butler]
(I’m never going back again)

[Pre-Chorus: Win Butler]
And you were born
In the little town
Before the awful sound
Had started coming down
There's so much inside you
That you won't let me see

You fly away from me
But it's an awful sound
When you hit the ground
It's an awful sound
When you hit the ground

[Chorus: Win Butler & Régine Chassagne]
I know there's a way we can make 'em pay
Think it over and say, "I'm never going back again."
But I know that there's a way we can leave today
Think it over...
[Bridge: Win Butler & Régine Chassagne]
We know there's a price to pay
For love in the reflective age

I met you up upon a stage
Our love in a reflective age

[Outro: Win Butler & Régine Chassagne]
Oh no, now you're gone
La-la, la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la, la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la
La-la, la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la, la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Genius Annotation

Awful Sound continues the story of two lovers set up by “Here Comes the Night Time II”. The album uses the fable of Orpheus and Eurydice as a metaphor for the toxic relationship of the couple, a man and a woman. Awful Sound is narrated by the man as he attempts to understand his partner’s failing mental health.

Genius Answer

In an interview with The Sun, Win Butler explains the relation between Awful Sound and a 1959 Brazilian movie about star-crossed lovers:

Regine and I watched the film Black Orpheus, which is super relevant because it’s based in Brazil during carnival and is the oldest pre Romeo and Juliet love story there is. We played that song to [our son] a hundred thousand times in the womb. If he is crying now, we play him that song and it quietens him. So it got to me. I obsess about ideas. I don’t know any other way to write. I try to find five different ways to look at an idea.
