So if you have fear, Apollo
Sit on my lyre, and
Play him like a piano, man
(I will, I will)

Meaning

The Myth of Apollo and Daphne

In this classic myth, Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, music, and poetry, falls in love with the nympth Daphne. However, Daphne did not love Apollo back.

As Apollo was chasing her, Daphne prayed to her father, a river god, to be rid of Apollo. Daphne’s father took pity on her, and transformed her into a tree.

On the ARTPOP album cover and in the booklet there are photos of a statue, portraying this myth.

By smoking weed, Gaga is ‘turning into a tree’, making her problems go away and morphing into another person — Mary Jane Holland.

The lyric “Play him like a piano, man” may be a reference to the famous Billy Joel song, “Piano Man”.
