“Heart Out” talks about Matty’s interest in a girl, who he seemingly grew up with in the same town. In this song he notes his interest in her and how he wishes to get to know her better.

The music video creatively depicts the moment in which the band members first played together at a charity event when they were very young. All members are played by child doppelgängers; in particular, frontman Matty is played by his younger brother, Louis Healy. It was released on September 7th, 2014, just a little over a year after the release of The 1975.

Matty described the lyrics of the album to The Guardian:

“And that’s the thing I’m really proud of in this album – it’s me figuring myself out. Even the line in Heart Out – ‘Your obsession with rocks and brown. And fu–ing the whole town’ … I’m always talking about me, really.”

“Heart Out” is the first time we used the saxophone as a feature instrument as opposed to a texture. It’s the first time we directly referenced our love of classic 80’s pop. Our love of John Hughes films is well documented, “Heart Out” is one of those songs. Youthful, yearning, over a major key.
