Genius Annotation

“Last Flowers” (previously titled “Last Flowers Till the Hospital”) apparently refers to a street sign on the way to Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK. Yorke refers to the poem “Ambulances” by Philip Larkin, which describes ambulances as

Closed like confessionals, they thread
Loud noons of cities, giving back
None of the glances they absorb.
Light glossy grey, arms on a plaque,
They come to rest at any kerb:
All streets in time are visited.

Thom Yorke wrote on radiohead.com:

“Last flowers till the hospital” is a sign discovered in Oxford -my unhealthy obsession with these institutions. analysts may get the connection. ambulances scream past my house at all hours of the day and night like the confessionals of Larkin’s “Ambulances.”

The song was originally part of the OK Computer recording sessions, and was originally going to be used by Yorke for his solo album The Eraser, but he opted instead to release it on the In Rainbows bonus disk in 2007. Pieces of the song can be heard during Meeting People Is Easy.
