The day the music died
Here McLean is drawing a comparison between the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper to the state of religion in the US. In 1966 Time magazine ran an issue with this cover story:
Many Americans were becoming atheists, and McLean links this trend to the “death of music” less than 10 years earlier.
