Fluffhead Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Fluffhead was a man
With a horrible disease

Could not find no cure
Won't you help him if you please?

[Chorus]
Fluffhead
Fluffhead

[Verse 2]
Fluff came to my door
Askin' me for change
His eyes were clear and pure
But his mind was so deranged

[Chorus]
Fluffhead
Fluffhead

[Verse 3]
Fluff went to a banker
Askin' for some bills
The banker said, "I ain't got that
But I sure got some powerful pills!", oh yeah!
[Chorus]
Fluffhead

[Outro]
(Fluffhead?)

About

Genius Annotation

The song that most Phish fans think of as “Fluffhead” is actually a combination of two tracks from their debut album Junta: “Fluffhead” and “Fluff’s Travels”. The portion published as “Fluffhead” comprises the primary narrative content of the suite. With lyrics written by frontman Trey Anastasio’s friend and occasional collaborator Steve Pollak (aka The Dude of Life), the song’s title character is actually Pollak’s brother, who was battling cancer at the time of the song’s writing.

One of Phish’s very earliest originals, “Fluffhead” appears in one of the first documented Phish setlists, from December 1, 1984 at Nectar’s. The song is sung there by its author, The Dude of Life.

Despite its length and lack of improvisational space (save for a brief, but ecstatic end jam), “Fluffhead” is a fan favorite that, like many songs from this period, has become more of a rarity since the mid-90s. Reflecting its significance, “Fluffhead” was the first song Phish played as they returned from hiatus after a five-year absence, bringing the song back after a 70-show break, the longest for the song in the band’s history, and creating possibly one of the most emotional moments between band and audience to date.
