Shadows are a representation of their spirits, as they walk aimlessly through the wilderness. Although they’re aware they’ve left everything behind them, including their family and their home, the couple appears unconcerned.
On their way to the festival, their original destination, they became disoriented and made several wrong turns. “They wanted the highway” means that they were in search of a particular road, but are happier as is.

After passing up the festival, where was the couple headed?
In reality, it’s likely that the driver, having Alzheimer’s, became mixed up and just went off track. The line, may be metaphorically saying that the couple was lead to a happy life without knowing.

"I got some later joints, and now joints" (Wale – Rotation) | rejected

What makes you think he’s referring to the candy? this is quite a stretch.

"[Refrain]" (Frank Ocean – Super Rich Kids) | rejected

would the word “chorus” not suffice? Trying to act all educated and shit…

"Uh... time lapse, bars rhyming, heart's bottomless pit" (Earl Sweatshirt – Chum) | accepted

Probably another reference to the Pit and The Pendulum. The man locked in the room with the swinging pendulum discovers a deep pit. The man wants to find out what is in the pit but can not, without falling in and dying. Earl might feel that way about his emotions?

…Maybe that’s a stretch. Earl says some complex shit though.
