Genius Annotation

The instantly refreshing “Girls Chase Boys” served as the lead single off Michaelson’s sixth album Lights Out. Optimistic and bright, Michaelson’s track regards the blurring of gender roles and sexuality in romantic relationships. Per Logo, she wrote:

More than just being about my experience, its focus shifted to include the idea that, no matter who or how we love, we are all the same. The video takes that idea one step further, and attempts to turn stereotypical gender roles on their head. Girls don’t exclusively chase boys. We all know this. We all chase each other and in the end we are all chasing after the same thing: love.

The single’s accompanying music video fit well with the lyrical content: an homage to Robert Palmer’s iconic “Simply Irresistible” and “Addicted to Love” music videos, the film displays a collection of men and women all wearing intense makeup and slicked back hair. Warped gender roles are very apparent, and Michaelson – a woman – becomes the center of attention while men become the background dancers.
