My girl, my girl don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night?
The character who goes into the pines is not always a lover. In different versions of the song, “the person who goes into the pines, or who is decapitated, [who are two different people in this version] is described as a man, woman, adolescent, husband, wife, or parent”
These first two lines also set up one of the themes of almost every version of the song, which is, according to writer Sharyn McCrumb, that “[t]here’s a woman doing something not socially acceptable, and she’s been caught at it”
