About

Genius Annotation

“Cure for the Itch” holds the distinction of being the only song performed solely by one member of the group. Joe Hahn, the band’s DJ, spins and scratches over complex and often unpredictable drum programming.

The title, “Cure for the Itch” can be viewed as having two meaning. A craving is often described as an itch when the cure is related to drugs, sex, or even music.

Alternately, one scratches an itch just as Joe Hahn scratches to create this incredible instrumental. A music video was created for the song of just Hahn’s scratches.

The song was sampled on a later Linkin Park song with Black Thought on vocals titled “X-Ecutioner Style."

Genius Answer

Chatting with the Linkin Park fans on their website back in 2002, Mike Shinoda shared what he was trying to do with “Cure for the Itch”:

“Cure for the Itch was my attempt at doing a song without words. I was trying to do something that would fit into a movie.

And in an interview with RockRage.com, Shinoda expanded on more background of the song:

That particular song is something that our DJ, Mr. Hahn, and I came up with. It came from a beat that he did with the drums that he did and the strings that I arranged. From there we just kind of went off in an electronic direction that I thought was cool. And I think it turned out really well. We’re totally happy with that. The band was totally stoked about it.

In an interview with Kerrang! Magazine in celebration of Hybrid Theory’s 20th anniversary, Joe Hahn discusses the split between rock and electronic music on the album, where the orchestral beat came from, and more.
