Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise Lyrics

[Instrumental Interlude]

[Chorus]
There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I’ll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

[Outro]
There’s a darkness upon me that’s flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what’s wrong and what’s right
There’s a darkness upon me that’s flooded in light
And I’m frightened by those that don’t see it

About

Genius Annotation

This song, in the broadest sense, is about conflict and contradiction. Lyrically, each line/verse presents a sort of contradiction (darkness vs light, wrong vs, right, black v. right, loved vs. rejected…the list goes on). Even the title contains such contradiction (doubt vs. promise).

Yet, as a whole, the song is overall quite balanced. Both verbally and illusionary, the song references the unsettling, yet very human experience that accompanies contradiction and conflict within our everyday lives. The end of each verse, however, seems to downplay the severity of such discomfort while at the same time drawing attention to the fact that many people fail to recognize or acknowledge such conflicts.

Similarly, to ‘the road not taken’ by Robert Frost, this song presents the idea that while recognition and acceptance of such choice and conflict within ourselves is important, in the long run, there is not much that really separates us.

Regardless of what one chooses to believe, become, or identify with, opposites/contradiction are implicit within such decisions. Yet choosing one over the other might not really make too much difference in the long run.
