Black Gives Way to Blue Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I don't want to feel no more
It's easier to keep fallin'
Imitations are pale
Emptiness... all tomorrows

[Pre-Chorus]
Haunted by your ghost...

[Chorus]
Lay down, black gives way to blue
Lay down, I'll remember you

[Verse 2]
Fading out by design
Consciously avoiding changes
Curtain's drawn, now it's done
Silencing all tomorrows

[Pre-Chorus]
Forcing a goodbye...

[Chorus]
Lay down, black gives way to blue
Lay down, I'll remember you

Genius Annotation

The 11th and final track of Alice in Chains’s 2009 album of the same name. Written by guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, “Black Gives Way to Blue” is a short yet poignant song dedicated to deceased frontman Layne Staley. It features special musical guest Elton John playing the piano, something that the band never thought they’d be able to have happen.

In a SiriusXM interview published on June 5, 2022, Jerry Cantrell talked about the track:

It was a big decision for the band to decide to continue on after the loss of Layne. And we went through that process together, invited William in, and I wrote this song that I felt needed to be written. It was ‘Black Gives Way to Blue’, the title track to that record. And, you know, I was basically saying goodbye to Layne and hello to our future and honoring all of that. It’s just a little short two-minute tune, but it’s very very impactful and very emotional and needed to be said.
