Genius Annotation

One of Billy Joel’s signature songs, “New York State of Mind” comes from the 1976 album Turnstiles and is something of a love song for the city. The artist was literally traveling on a Greyhound bus from Los Angeles, where he had spent three years making a living and trying to boost his career. He returned to New York and the song was written shortly after he arrived. It was never released as a single but is a concert mainstay.

It has been played as a morale booster for New York during the fundraising concerts following two majorly devastating events: The 9/11 attack of the World Trade Center in 2001 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
