Jude Law and a Semester Abroad Lyrics

Tell all the English boys you meet
About the American boy back in the states
The American boy you used to date
Who would do anything you say

Who would do anything you say

[Bridge]
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it

Genius Annotation

“Jude Law And A Semester Abroad” is Brand New’s first single and arguably the seminal track that kickstarted their long musical career. It features aggressive guitars and a catchy chorus that is repeated exponentially towards the end of the song. Popular ‘emo’ tropes of the time are showcased, from the exaggerated nasal ‘whine’ to the chorus sung as a round over a short repeated phrase.

The song title is a reference to English actor, Jude Law, who came to prominence in the 90s and known for playing flaymboyant, charming roles. His connection to the the song is that he is a handsome British guy and Jesse’s ex-girlfriend is taking a college semester abroad in England. Jesse was presumably dumped as a result of his ex’s semester abroad trip, and as he drunkenly considers his ex spending an entire semester in England, he cannot help but think of the awesome, attractive, European men she will leave him for.
