  • Lyrics should be broken down into individual lines

The ninth song on The Rising, “Further On (Up The Road) is sung from the perspective of a soldier. The song follows the narrator’s thoughts on war, their current predicament, and the hopes they have for their country in the future.

Despite assumptions that the song was in response to the invasion of Afghanistan, “Further On (Up The Road)” was written prior to The Rising and was performed in July 2000 at Madison Square Garden.

“Further On (Up The Road)” was covered by Johnny Cash in a mellower tune, more in line with the country genre.
