CHVRCHES explained the making of “Gun” on Twitter as part of a track-by-track video series for the 10th anniversary of The Bones of What You Believe:
“Gun”, in hindsight, I wish I had done these lyrics slightly differently because I was under the impression that a person being a gun was a concept everybody knew. Now in hindsight, I think it may just have been my specific group of friends who knew that as a piece of slang. But it’s supposed to mean, you know, when someone’s a bit of a pistol. They’re a bit of a weapon, they’re a bit of a liability.
On our song “Gun”, I thought that we were trying to write a Prince-meets-Rihanna record. I don’t think we were successful in that endeavor. Instead, it came out being this sort of Frankenstein, half-pop, half-indie, like I don’t really know what it is. Again, that’s like CHVRCHES through and through.
