Casper the Friendly Ghost Lyrics

[Intro: See 'n Say Toy]
The coyote goes:
Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

[Verse 1]
He was smiling through his own personal hell
Dropped his last dime in a wishing well
But he was hoping too close and then he fell
Now he’s Casper the friendly ghost

[Verse 2]
He was always polite to the people who’d tell him
That he was nothing but a lazy bum

But goodbye to them, he had to go
Now he’s Casper the friendly ghost

[Verse 3]
Nobody treated him nice while he was alive
You can’t buy no respect like the librarian said
But everybody respects the dead
They love the friendly ghost

[Verse 4]
And now they say we’ll never forget that he learned, yes
We were mean to him, but he never burned us, and
Love lives forever, thanks to you, the friendly ghost
Thank you, Casper the friendly ghost

About

Genius Annotation

This song uses the character of Casper the Friendly Ghost as a allegory for Daniel Johnston’s loneliness and desires to be appreciated. It is also the first song on the album to showcase Johnston’s primitive “production” techniques and introduction of non-musical elements. As is the case on many future songs, this song features a “See and Say” which announces the sound a coyote makes at the beginning and “The cow says ‘moo,’” at the end.

In 1990, seven years after this song’s release, the character of Casper would take on increased importance in Johnston’s life when he, believing himself to be Casper, threw the keys out of a plane he and his father were flying in. Both survived, but Johnston was committed to a mental hospital immediately afterwards.
