Lady Grinning Soul Lyrics
She'll come, she'll go
She'll lay belief on you
Skin sweet with musky oil
The lady from another grinning soul
Cologne she'll wear
Silver and Americard
She'll drive a beetle car
And beat you down at cool Canasta
[Chorus]
And when the clothes are strewn
Don't be afraid of the room
Touch the fullness of her breast
Feel the love of her caress
She will be your living end
[Verse 2]
She'll come, she'll go
She'll lay belief on you
But she won't stake her life on you
How can life become her point of view
[Chorus]
And when the clothes are strewn
Don't be afraid of the room
Touch the fullness of her breast
Feel the love of her caress
She will be your living end
She will be your living end
She will be your living end
She will be your living end
She will be your living end
About
The closing track on Bowie’s 1973 Aladdin Sane, this track is a very romantic piano ballad. It is often cited as being inspired from David’s first meeting with soul singer Claudia Lennear, who is also said to be the inspiration behind the song “Brown Sugar” by The Rolling Stones.
According to Mike Garson—who plays piano throughout Aladdin Sane—the song is
about as romantic as it gets … French with a little Franz Liszt thrown in there."

As stated on the Daily Mail:
“Mike Garson’s piano opens with the most ridiculous and spot-on re-creation of a 19th Century music hall ‘exotic’ number. I can see now the ‘poses plastiques’ as if through a smoke-filled bar. Fans, castanets and lots of Spanish black lace and little else. Sexy, mmm? And for you, Madam?
This was written for a wonderful young girl whom I’ve not seen for more than 30 years. When I hear this song she’s still in her 20s, of course.
A song will put you tantalisingly close to the past, so close that you can almost reach out and touch it. The sound of ghosts again"
