Strangeness and Charm Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Hydrogen in our veins, it cannot hold itself, our blood is burning
And the pressure in our bodies that echoes up above it is exploding
And our particles they're burning up because they yearn for each other
And although we stick together, it seems that we are stranging one another

[Pre-Chorus]
Feel it on me, love, feel it on me, love, feel it on me, love
(Strangeness and Charm)
See it on me, love, see it on me, love, see it on me, love
(Strangeness and Charm)
And atom to atom
Oh, can you feel it on me, love?
And a pattern to pattern
Oh, can you see it on me, love?
Atom to atom
Oh, what's the matter with me, love?
(Strangeness and Charm)

[Chorus]
The static of your arms, it is the catalyst
Oh the chemical it burns, there is nothing but this
It's the purest element, but it's so volatile
An equation heaven sent, a drug for angels
Strangeness and Charm
[Pre-Chorus]
Feel it on me, love, feel it on me, love, feel it on me, love
(Strangeness and Charm)
See it on me, love, see it on me, love, see it on me, love
(Strangeness and Charm)
And atom to atom
Oh, can you feel it on me, love?
And a pattern to pattern
Oh, can you see it on me, love?
Atom to atom
Oh, what's the matter with me, love?
(Strangeness and Charm)

[Chorus]
The static of your arms, it is the catalyst
Oh the chemical it burns, there is nothing but this
It's the purest element, but it's so volatile
An equation heaven sent, a drug for angels
Strangeness and Charm

[Bridge]
Strangeness and Charm
Hey— so cold! (Strangeness and Charm)
Hey— so cold! (Strangeness and Charm)
Hey— so cold! (Strangeness and Charm)
Hey— (Strangeness and Charm)
[Chorus]
Strangeness and Charm
The static of your arms, it is the catalyst
Oh the chemical it burns, there is nothing but this
It's the purest element, but it's so volatile
An equation heaven sent, a drug for angels

Feel it on me, love, feel it on me, love, feel it on me, love
(Strangeness and Charm)
See it on me, love, see it on me, love, see it on me, love
(Strangeness and Charm)
Feel it on me, love, feel it on me, love, feel it on me, love
(Strangeness and Charm)
See it on me, love, see it on me, love, see it on me, love
(Strangeness and Charm)

[Outro]
Ho, ho...
Down... down, down, down
Ho, ho...
Down... down, down, down
Ho, ho...
Down... down, down, down
Ho, ho...
Down... down, down, down
Ho!

Genius Annotation

“Strangeness and Charm” describes love on an atomic basis. Strangeness and Charm refer to quarks, the smallest known type of matter. There are six types of quarks: up, down, strange, top/truth, charm, and bottom/beauty.

It was one of the earliest songs to be written and included on Ceremonials. It was debuted live during the Lungs tour – premiering on May 2nd, 2010. It was performed during the tour a further fifty-four times, up until July 2011. Interestingly, after Ceremonials‘ release, it was only played four times, in March 2012. Florence spoke about the song and future albums in a 2010 interview with Australian radio station, Triple J:

[“Strangeness and Charm”] was written with Paul Epworth… Time to start writing starts in earnest in September [2010]. So from then on, you know depending on how well it goes… we’ll see.

In the same Triple J interview, she spoke about the meaning of the song:

I was talking to my dad about these two sub-atomic particles called ‘strangeness and charm’. People only know they exist because we can feel their effects. I thought that was quite a nice metaphor for you know affection and emotion. I think with things like that it’s always finding the humanity in things. But I thought it was quite an interesting phrase and it kind of took me in a tangent that resulted in this song."

Florence is not the first artist to use Strangeness and Charm as inspiration. British band, Hawkwind had an 1977 album called Quark, Strangeness And Charm. The lead single from that album also shared the name.

What did Florence + the Machine say about "Strangeness and Charm"?
Genius Answer

This song takes its name from the smallest types of matter in the world of quantum physics. It was inspired by a conversation about science Florence Welch had with her father, a former advertising executive who later ran an organic campsite.

It’s actually the name of the two smallest particles that there are when you split the atom, so I wrote a song about it,“ she told NME. "I even managed to fit the word ‘hydrogen’ in there.

Science does run in the family; Welch’s mother is the Professor of Renaissance Studies and Academic Dean of Arts at the University of London.

If the quark is called "strange", why does the song says "strangeness?"
Genius Answer

The strangeness of a particle is defined by an equation in which one of the variables is the number of strange quarks. That’s why she mentions “an equation heaven sent
