The band has stated that “This Orient” is about nothing in particular.

Foals in an interview with Yorkshire Evening Post:

That was more of a song that came out of a sonic idea,“ says Walter. "It was not written about anything in particular. When we were in the studio we were playing around with modular synths and the producer made us make a human sequencer. "It consisted of three voices, each with a note. We had a chart on the floor in front of us which Jimmy would manipulate as if he was controlling the notes. We would make a regular pattern and we could move around our voices. We had to concentrate a lot but that’s what the introductory voices were doing.
