Genius Annotation

“Doll” is the opening track on the Foo Fighter’s internationally successful second album, The Colour and the Shape, released May 20, 1997.

The album’s primary lyrical inspiration came from Dave Grohl’s divorce with photographer Jennifer Youngblood in 1996. The lyrical content is much more introspective than Dave’s previous works.

The album’s song order was designed to resemble a therapy session by splitting the album between up-tempo tracks and ballads, thus symbolizing conflicting emotions; “Doll” is the first soft track.

Grohl has said of the track:

[“Doll” is] basically a song about being afraid to enter into something you’re not prepared for.
