Isabel Lyrics

[Verse 1]
So now the years are rolling by
And it's not long since you and I could have been train drivers and astronauts

And now we're stuck in furnished ruts
But yet the thing that really cuts is that we can't remember how we got caught
Filtered air, computer screens, muffled sighs and might-have-beens

Count your blessings, then breathe, and count to ten
And though it doesn't often show, we are scared
Because we know our forefathers were farmers and fishermen

[Chorus]
And so the world has changed, worse or better's hard to tell
But my hope remains within the arms of Isabel

[Verse 2]
So now our calloused hands once told
A story honest as its old of sowing seeds and setting sail

But now our hands are soft and weak
And working seven days a week at these salvation schemes
That are bound to fail

[Chorus]
And so the world has changed, worse or better's hard to tell
But my hope remains within the arms of Isabel

[Bridge]
And I'll admit that I am scared of what I don't understand
Darling, if you're there, gentle voice and soothing hands
To quiet my despair
To shore up all my plans
Darling, if you're there...

About

Genius Annotation

This tender song from Poetry of the Deed was described by Frank as “an old fashioned love song.” He described it to a BBC Radio DJ thus.

A friend of mine and I were discussing my first two records [Sleep Is For The Week and Love Ire & Song] and he pointed out that I only wrote miserable songs about relationships to date and maybe I should think on that subject so I decided to have a stab at writing a happy love song. “Isabel” was the result and it’s about my wonderful then-girlfriend.

For a little more on Isabel, you could consult a 2009 Evening Standard article:

When my parents were seemingly happily married I perversely believed marriage was an evil institution, but since they split up, I see it as something to treasure… this change of heart may… have more to do with Isabel, 27, an events organizer… dating “between gigs” for the past 18 months.
