Plain Sailing Weather Lyrics

[Chorus]
Give me one fine day of plain sailing weather
And I can fuck up anything, anything
It was a wonderful life when we were together
And now I've fucked up everything

Give me one fine day of plain sailing weather
And I can fuck up anything, anything
It was a wonderful life when we were together
And now I've fucked up every little goddamn thing
Every little goddamn thing
Every little goddamn thing
Every little goddamn thing

[Outro]
And I've been skirting round the rim
Of doing something brave
And not just standing, but jumping in
Of making circles into squares
Of laying down the bare facts
Like a burden I can't bear

And I can almost find the words
But I can see the way you'd
Fold your hands, speak my name like a curse upon your pretty lips
The pressured white behind your fingertips

Genius Annotation

The fourth song on Turner’s 2013 album Tape Deck Heart is a bitter ode to breakups that pulls no punches. Despite the recent success of Mumford & Sons' similarly profane “Little Lion Man” as a radio single and even at the Grammys, Frank’s label wouldn’t allow the song to be released as a single.

In a recent Alternative Press interview, Frank characterized the song thus:

It’s a raw song, one of the darker cuts from the record. The label spent a while trying to get me to clean up the lyrics, but sometimes you just need to say you fucked up. I also got to use the world “fractious,” which was nice. That’s a fine word, right there.
