Sailor’s Boots Lyrics
If I had been born
Well I would've been a sailor
A-sailing I would go
I'd sail around the capes and across the seven seas
And then back home
If I had been born
And I would know the waters
And the waters would know me
And I would cut across the waves
And be as happy as can be
I'd be landless, I'd be loveless
I'd be flight and fancy free
And I would know the waters
And the waters would know me
When I think about the time
And place where I was born
Oh, I wonder if the hands of fate
Had slipped and placed me wrong
Because there are ships I could have sailed
And sailor's boots I could have worn
When I think about the time
And place where I was born
Well I would've been a sailor
A-sailing I would go
I'd sail around the capes and across the seven seas
And then back home
If I had been born
And I would know the waters
And the waters would know me
And I would cut across the waves
And be as happy as can be
I'd be landless, I'd be loveless
I'd be flight and fancy free
And I would know the waters
And the waters would know me
When I think about the time
And place where I was born
Oh, I wonder if the hands of fate
Had slipped and placed me wrong
Because there are ships I could have sailed
And sailor's boots I could have worn
When I think about the time
And place where I was born

Genius Annotation
Apparently, The Road wasn’t enough for Frank – he wants the whole open sea!
Like “Cowboy Chords”, this song drips with nostalgia for ways of life we’ve forgotten, and it’s also rich with the nautical imagery that Frank is so fond of.
Musically, the song is reminiscent of an old Sea Shanty, but very much stripped down. The first verse is sung a capella, before Frank’s acoustic guitar joins in. You can’t help but wonder whether the song would have been done better by the likes of Bellowhead, but Frank avoids the clichés of the genre whilst still carving a nice ditty.
