In an interview, singer/lyricist Samuel T. Herring explained about the song:
in ‘Spirit’ there’s the knowledge of who you are as a person, holding that, seeing it and learning to respect it. Just because your own Singles ideas are different doesn’t mean they aren’t important. There’s allusions to the natural world and falling in love with that….

“Spirit” [is] a pretty dynamic song because I push upwards, dip back down to the low in the third verse, then bring it back really strong in the final chorus. That’s to create tension and bring people close, then blast them with a message.
