No One Knows Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Why should my fun have to end?
For me, it's only the beginning
See my friends begin to age
A short countdown to their end

[Chorus]
Call me irresponsible
Call me habitual

But when you think of me
Do you fill your head with schemes?
Better think again, 'cause no one knows

[Verse 2]
I don't want to cause no harm
But sometimes, my actions hurt
Is there somethin' I should find
To make plans for forever?

[Chorus]
Call me irresponsible
Call me habitual
But when you think of me
Do you fill your head with schemes?
Better think again, 'cause no one knows
[Instrumental Break]

[Outro]
Call me irresponsible
Call me habitual
(Does it seem like all your memories fade?)
But when you think of me
(You soak up knowledge to fill the space)
Do you fill your head with schemes?
(Yet still, my answer remains; I don't know)
Better think again, 'cause no one knows
I don't...

Genius Annotation

In “No One Knows,” lead singer and lyricist Billie Joe Armstrong temporarily breaks away from Kerplunk’s otherwise energetic sound in order to deliver a somber reflection on the realities of growing up.

Billie has explored his fearful and resistant attitudes towards aging in a number of songs on the album. He discusses moving out of his mother’s home in “Welcome to Paradise,” expresses uncertainty towards his future in “Private Ale,” laments the eternal nature of death in “One of My Lies,” and he wonders where he’ll end up when he grows old, if he manages to grow old, in Android.

However, “No One Knows” stands out in that its lyrics imply a personal growth. Though Billie is still clearly anxious about the prospect of maturing, he is also beginning to accept it, along with its inherent uncertainty.
