Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? Lyrics
A thought burst in my head
And I need to tell you
It's news that I forethought
Was it just a dream
That happened long ago?
I think I just forgot
[Pre-Chorus]
Well, it hasn't been the first time
And it sure does drive me mad
That's what I'm saying
[Chorus]
There's a boy who fogs his world, and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation, and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand, but always ends up sitting
Someone help him up, or he is gonna end up quitting
[Verse 2]
I shuffle through my mind
To see if I can find
The words I left behind
Was it just a dream
That happened long ago?
Oh well, never mind
Well it hasn't been the first time
And it sure does drive me mad
That's what I'm saying
[Chorus]
There's a boy who fogs his world, and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation, and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand, but always ends up sitting
Someone help him up, or he is gonna end up quitting
[Bridge]

About
Off of Kerplunk, Green Day’s second and last album from Lookout! Records before their major debut on Reprise, “Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?” is a short punk song about everyone’s favorite phony from The Catcher in the Rye and is true to Holden’s character.
Billie Joe Armstrong remarked that in high school his teacher made him read The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger. This classic novel was very boring to him and he hated reading it (the idea of forcing a kid to read was repugnant to Billie Joe). When he became an adult he decided to read it again, as it was “Punk Rock.” The narrator and main character of the novel is an outcast named Holden Caulfield – this song is about him.
