I read this song in one of two ways, with the first being more likely.

This song is an analogy of the hedgehog dilemma – the main character of the song is scared of and not ready to commit to a more intimate relationship with a potential partner. This is especially consistent with the line “You’re as close as it gets without touching me”, which is a common metaphor to explain the dilemma.

The second way is that it could be a cry for help from being a victim of a pushy or assaulting partner. But I think that’s inconsistent with the lines “Oh, I was doing so well” and “I feel a weakness coming on” which seems self-referential to the main character’s inability to keep their psychological/emotional walls up in moments of intimacy.
