Table for Glasses Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Sweep the dirty stairs
The ones I waited on
This is just for me
I felt it watching her

[Chorus]
And it happens too fast
To make sense of it, make it last
It happens too fast
To make sense of it, make it last

[Verse 2]
Where do you intend to go
With your dirty dress?
Lead my skeptic sight
To the table and the light

[Chorus]
It happens too fast
To make sense of it, make it last
It happens too fast
To make sense of it, make it last

[Bridge]
Lead my skeptic sight
Lead my skeptic sight
Not asking of me anything
Saying nothing about what it means
Without anybody telling me
How I should feel
[Outro]
Lead my skeptic sight
To the table and the light

About

Genius Annotation

One of the very few songs that Jim Adkins acutally discussed or explained directly, Table for Glasses describes what Jim witnessed at a local art show in Phoenix, AZ. Outside the venue, waiting for a dance piece to begin, Jim saw a girl cleaning the steps of an outdoor staircase with the bottom of the white dress she was wearing. Curious about her intentions, he watched as she walked toward a candle-lit table that had been prepared; the top of which was covered in empty glasses. She then picked pieces of dirt and debris off of her dress, and placed the debris into the glasses. Jim explains that this event is the reason why he intentionally avoids describing his lyrics or revealing their direct meanings. Watching this ‘art piece’ alone, and trying to discern the meaning for himself was a powerful experience he wishes to provide to JEW’s own listeners – to encourage them to pay attention and find meaning / beauty on their own.
