I Still Believe Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You look in my eyes
And I get emotional inside
I know it's crazy
But you still can touch my heart
And after all this time
You'd think that I
I wouldn't feel the same
But time melts into nothing
And nothing's changed

[Chorus]
I still believe
Someday you and me
Will find ourselves in love again
I had a dream
Someday you and me
Will find ourselves in love again

[Verse 2]
Each day of my life
I'm filled with all the joy I could find
You know that I
I'm not the desperate type
If there's one spark of hope
Left in my grasp
I'll hold it with both hands
It's worth the risk of burning
To have a second chance
[Pre-Chorus]
No, no, no, no, no, no, I need you, baby
I still believe that we can be together
Whoa, oh, no, no, no, ooh
If we believe that true love never has to end
Then we must know that we will love again, mmm
Ohh

[Chorus]
I still believe
Someday you and me
Will find ourselves in love again (Oh baby, yeah, yeah)
I had a dream, you and me
Will find ourselves in love again, yeah
I still believe (Ooh baby, I do)
Someday you and me (Just give me one more try)
In love again, yeah
I had a dream (I miss your love)
Someday you and me (Mmm, mmm)
Will find ourselves in love again (Ahh, ahh, oh)
I still believe
Someday you and me
Will find ourselves in love again
I had a dream

About

Genius Annotation

“I Still Believe” was originally released by R&B vocalist Brenda K. Starr in 1988. The then-18-year-old Mariah, who sang backup for Starr, is actually on the original track.

Mariah released her cover of “I Still Believe” as part of her first Greatest Hits compilation, humbly called 1s (Sony, 1998). She recorded the song as a tribute to Starr, who accelerated Mariah’s breakthrough by famously passing along the teenage singer’s demo to Tommy Mottola, CBS Records chief. Mottola signed Mariah to her first record deal with Sony, managed the release of her best-selling debut album in 1990, and, three years later, married her.

In the accompanying music video, Mariah recreates her idol Marilyn Monroe’s famous overseas visit to perform for American troops.

What did Mariah Carey say about "I Still Believe"?
Genius Answer

In her #1s Liner Notes, Mariah said:

I chose the bonus tracks for various reasons… ‘I Still Believe’ reminds me of the fact that not so long ago I was a teenage girl with nothing to my name but a demo tape, my voice and my ability to write songs. Brenda K. Starr treated me like a ‘star’ and gave me a shot as a back-up singer. This remake is my tribute to her.

Carey even mentioned her on The Oprah Show, in 1998:

Can I tell you a quick thing about this song? I used to be a backup singer for the girl who sang this originally, her name is Brenda K. Starr when I was like eighteen years old and I was a back up singer for her. This was her song, so this was like my tribute to her – she really helped me get started.
