About

Genius Annotation

Another in a series of songs that appear to be about happy altered mental states that the singer likes to retreat to. The imagery here is more psychedelic and vivid than the previous two tracks.

The musical feel is similar to the other songs on the album – here the bass provides the foundation of the song while guitar embellishes. The vocals are sung in unison but slightly flat and out of harmony. The drummer provides a solid slightly snakey beat using cymbal crashes to great effect. Vocally produced bird jungle noises can be heard in the background during the outro (echoing “Animal Kingdom”).

There are several versions of this song on the deluxe edition (Rykodisc, 1999). An alternate take is slower and in a different key. In between verses, the brothers awkwardly banter about the lyrics. An even stranger third version that clocks in at 8:35 is a naive instrumental take on the song with amateurish percussion played over a robotic bass line. It sounds like something that would have come out of the underground cassette culture of the time.
