About

Genius Annotation

The second single from the record, it usually gets overshadowed by Modest Mouse’s break-out track “Float On,” which propelled them into superstardom for a brief period.

While that track was quite poppy, “Ocean Breathes Salty” is much closer in sound to their earlier albums: mournful, jangly guitars mixed with the trademark and unique vocals of Isaac Brock. The music video mirrors the message in the track. A child is seen dragging Brock (playing the role of an injured wild bird) around, as Brock sings about a soul who is destined to carry the ghost of a lover or friend through life with them. The child eventually buries Brock with his bandmates, only for them to spring up from the ground and continue to entertain the child, symbolic of the final line.

The track didn’t chart, a let down after “Float On” reached number 1 on the US Alternative Songs chart.
